Background and Vision for The Holistic Education Review (HER)
The Holistic Education Review (HER) is the merging of three streams of academic publications on holistic education: The Holistic Educator Newsletter (HEN), The Holistic Education Review, and Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice. While merging these streams together, HER is also the birth of a new publication.
The Holistic Educator Newsletter began in 1991 as part of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development’s (ASCD) Wholistic Education Network. Jack Miller was an editor from 1996 until 2011, when Susan Schiller and Gary Babiuk assumed the editorial roles. Throughout the history of HEN, the newsletter has been published twice a year, Spring and Fall.
In the summer of 2020, Susan and Gary asked Paul Freedman if he would assume the role of editor when they retired at the end of the year. Paul invited Laurel Tien and Renee Owen to join him as the new volunteer editorial team. Susan and Gary provided the mailing list of scholars and practitioners currently receiving HEN.
As a team, the current editorial team identified the need for a peer-reviewed journal on holistic education, especially since the journal, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice, edited by Ron Miller, had been discontinued (since 2014). Ron was also editor for a previous holistic journal called Holistic Education Review, founded in 1988.
While the need for a peer-review journal exists, we didn’t want to lose the free-form, community-based nature of the Holistic Educator Newsletter, so we decided to fulfill both needs in one hybrid publication. We chose the name Holistic Education Review (with Ron Miller’s blessings) as a symbol of merging of the two streams.
Format and Publishing
HER will continue to publish two issues a year, Spring (May) and Fall (November).
HER will be published as an Open Journal, freely accessible, through the hosting site.
HER publishes both peer review scholarly articles and community-oriented newsletter articles.
Who Can Submit?
Anyone may submit an original article to be considered for publication in the Holistic Education Review provided they own the copyright to the work being submitted or is authorized by the copyright owner or owners to submit the article. Authors are the initial owners of the copyrights to their works, unless the authors have, as a condition of employment, agreed to transfer copyright to their employer. There are no fees for authors to publish in the journal.
General Submission Rules
Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). Please note: "Publication" in a working-paper series does not constitute prior publication. In addition, by submitting material to Holistic Education Review, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at Holistic Education Review. If you have questions about the submission terms for the Holistic Education Review please contact the Production Editor at Laurel.tien@TLCommunity.org
Review Process for Peer Review Articles
Academic submissions undergo a double-blinded peer-review process, which means that both the reviewer and author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process. The results of the review will be returned to the author with one of four responses: unconditional acceptance, acceptance pending minor revisions, acceptance pending major revisions, or not accepted.
Initial submission of articles to the Holistic Education Review should be as a Word document, with body of text in 12pt. Calabri, 1.5 spaced, using American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition format and style. Please observe the page limits specified in the above section.
