Smoking cessation tools include behavioural counselling (BC), nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) and the novel vape or E-cigarette (ECs) devices. This study compares the efficacy of ECs and BC. A literature search was performed using the Pubmed and Cochrane Library databases. ECs led to higher quit rates, especially for smokers with high nicotine dependency. However, there are concerns for the side effects and long-term health risks of EC use. BC has strong evidence of effectiveness with no documented side effects. There is currently a gap in literature that directly compares BC and ECs, so further research would inform health care workers when recommending smoking cessation options.

Recommended by Supervisor Brian Hyndman
ER -
