Literature Review: The Effects of Dietary and Pharmaceutical Interventions on Bowel Preparation for Prostate Cancer Irradiation
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To review current interventions for bowel preparation prior to radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. Interventional policies incorporating dietary and/or pharmaceutical strategies were reviewed.
METHODS: An online search for literature was executed via search engines including, but not limited to, PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCOhost. Studies were chosen based on a developed criteria.
RESULTS: A comprehensive table was developed describing the various interventions tested and results demonstrated in the current literature.
CONCLUSION: Currently, there is no standardized dietary or pharmaceutical intervention that is used clinically across all cancer centre sites. Although various interventions are able to provide relatively consistent bowel preparation, more comprehensive studies need to be performed in a more extensive sample size.
